Other Worlds: The Art of Illustration

I am curating an upcoming art show of some amazing Illustrators at Western Oregon University on January 9th through February 8th. Opening reception is from 4:30pm - 6pm on the 9th

Some huge names in the world of illustration at this show, as well as some rising stars. I also created the show card and poster using the artists work that will be in the show.

The Eleventh Hour, final Pic

So hour eleven was simply spent taking photos hoping my crappy camera could get a decent one that I could use. I should have borrowed a better camera, but I was not thinking...oh well..

Got a decent one. Brought it into photoshop fixed some of the loss of color and sharpness. Also tilted the floor a bit more because it was not sitting right.

Anyway, here is the final pic

Anniversary Present

Yesterday I started painting a picture for my lovely wife Rachel. It turned out pretty good for only spending 5 hours on it.

Dog Family at Dinner

It has been awhile but I am finally getting around to posting stuff again. I have a ton of things to post the problem is actually posting it.

We were asked to take an animal and put them in a human environment. As is customary for me lately I decided to mix a little pop culture and art history to come up with a drawing. The idea mixes the card playing dog pictures and A Norman Rockwell painting from the Saturday Evening Post.

In case you dont know what I am talking about....

Some sketches ...
Sometimes and by that I mean all the time, my checkout clerk is a turtle....

tighter perspective

little further developed sketch

Finished (well mostly, I need to go back in and add some more colored pencil work, some of the color is too light)

Mobster Drawing (inProgress)

Working on a new drawing, wanted to post some of the developmental renderings, even though I have a lot of other work to post. This will be gone over with pen and ink, which I love, but it makes me a little sad because I am really digging the tone and pencil marks.

Part 1: create a character, and develop a character sheet, has to have 3 or 4 facial expressions, plus a front view, side view, back view, and 3/4 view of your character.

Started with facial expressions, nervous about getting the proportions of the model turning correct. Have yet to draw a subject from more than one angle and keep it consistent.

I do however, like to draw faces!  What expression is this, inquisitive? Maybe over hearing something? or someone has just addressed him who has no business addressing him "ehh, yea, who are ya?"

Expression: Just got some good news!

Expression: ummm... this is... him with sunglasses and hat...or rather it will be

Expression: Just got some bad news!

Model Sheet Part 2:

Ok, I rocked it... oops! I somehow managed to draw the character in what appears to be pretty close measurements and proportions to each other! Worked some more on both the faces with glasses. The model sheet ended sooner then I thought so I drew his hat and his weapon of choice a hammer.

"ehhh, work on me some more kid"

Well it is coming along, still a little awkward here and there.

This looks contemplative to me. Yea?

My eye is weird please fix that, thank u

Part 2 Illustration.  After creating our character we had to illustrate them in an environment. Here is the beginnings of that.

Taking place in a bathroom stall. Going to graphite the room up, theres a guy on the floor just below him about to recieve a blow to the head with the hammer. Not sure how I feel about it so far. Trying to decide if bathroom really works. Was thinking I could put them in a dark construction site and they would be illuminated from a spot light, and add a few in the background revealing the frames of the walls etc etc. But who knows.

Book #2 Finished

So here is the story in all its glory. There are things I would definitely do differently. The main thing I dislike is the writing, I felt stuck somehow on the words, and after writing them down they didn't convey exactly what I wanted them to, but I was running out of time so I had to get something down. Also I seemed to tighten up with my drawing when I started to draw in the book. I am not sure if I just needed to draw and loosen up before starting to draw in the book, or if the gesso effected how I was drawing (as it was rough and the pen did not flow as well) or a combo of the two.

Yet I do like the book, it was a fun project. This is definitely something I would explore later on my own time.
