The Eleventh Hour, final Pic

So hour eleven was simply spent taking photos hoping my crappy camera could get a decent one that I could use. I should have borrowed a better camera, but I was not thinking...oh well..

Got a decent one. Brought it into photoshop fixed some of the loss of color and sharpness. Also tilted the floor a bit more because it was not sitting right.

Anyway, here is the final pic

Anniversary Present

Yesterday I started painting a picture for my lovely wife Rachel. It turned out pretty good for only spending 5 hours on it.

Art Dump of Art Firsts (or fists)

These were just laying around so I decided I should post them, they dont deserve their own entry but perhaps all together they deserve some sort of mention. This is mostly a lot of new media stuff I was trying. Well besides the charcoal and oil paintings of fists, but I had yet to do skin tones (and by that I mean skin tones that were half way human, these are at least getting there)

This is a gouache painting on yupo paper. Just for the record I HATE YUPO PAPER!!!, I mean maybe I just didnt understand how to use it with gouache, but it drove me crazy the constant smearing of the pigment. I blamed the gouache at first, but I have since tried gouache on normal FRIGGIN paper and I like that a lot. Actually really like how fast gouache is on normal paper, been working on some stuff, hopefully will be done soon!

Charcoal skull, black paper... you know... good times, oh wait no this is colored pencil... my bad.

Encaustics, WHO CARES! I really hated wasting my time on painting with wax, im sure some people can get some really nice stuff out of wax painting, but seriously... what a waste of time, nevermind that they arent very good, but I could have spent those two or three weeks actually painting something or actually learning something with OIL paints or any kind of paint... but WAX? ugh, I should melt them down and maybe I can somehow utilize the board underneath.

Two more paintings

Today was my last finale, and I picked up all my portfolios. Yay for spring break!

Here are my two finale paintings.

The first painting was a study for the finale project and was finished in two hours. I learned a lot by doing this project. I am usually a pretty slow painter, mostly because I don't feel entirely confident in my abilities. This helped me to make decisions quickly and mix colors quickly.

White Objects

Ever tried to paint a still life filled with nothing but white objects, and a white sheet as a background?

It is... to say the least, a challenge. Especially for someone who has little to no experience painting. I must say that doing this exercise taught me a ton about value and color mixing. The subtle shades of white eggs, sea shells, animal skulls, and cups are hard to capture.

I think I was successful in my rendering of the scene.

Still Life Paintings

Finally a weekend where I am not inundated with work! Here are a few still life paintings from the beginning of the term. They aren't very exciting but what can you do? Ill have more exciting stuff to put up as the weekend goes on.

Alchemists of Art

These images (unfortunately) don't do any justice to seeing these works up close and in person. Yet driving all the way to Western to see the show is probably out of the question for most of you. The next show will be a bigger deal, this was just practice really. I think the art work is pretty good for two first year students with little to no art training. Plus I think for my first hanging of a show I did pretty good. The frames were hand made by Rachels dad Joe and myself, and Rachel painted all except one, which I ended up painting.

So here are some pics from the show.

Setting Up: In these shots you can see Huachao and Crystal helping hang the sign. This was the last Friday of the term and we started hanging this show at eleven that morning. It is somewhere around four in these pictures. We were all so tired we didn't bother to ever get out of our jammies.

The sign is made out of vinyl and stuck to this paper so as you peel the paper away you have to make sure that they are sticking to the wall and not being pulled away with the paper. If they don't stick and you pull one off from the paper it usually becomes a disaster to try to get that one letter back into the correct placement.

As Huachao peels away crystal watches to make sure that doesnt happen.

A Walk Through: Here is what the show looks like if you walk by it. I think the curved wall is pretty cool. The wall to the right of this picture is all glass so you can easily see the show even if you are walking on the outside of the building. Which I also think is cool because it means that there is more of an opportunity to pull people inside to get a closer look.
